Dilution
= Homeopathic "Potencies" We define "Potency";
as the
different levels of concentration of a homeopathic
substance. We distinguish the decimal
dilution as D in Europe
or X in the USA:
The centisimal as C- by consecutive steps, the
medicinal substance is
"dynamized" with the carrying substance in a 1:100 proportion.
The LM or Q dilution - in consecutive steps,
the medicinal substance is
"dynamized" (diluted) with the carrying substance in a 1: 50,000
proportion.
Homeopathic products are prepared from substances or products called
"Stocks", in accordance with homeopathic manufacturing procedures. The
raw materials are of botanical, zoological, chemical or mineral origin.
"Stocks" are diluted using "vehicles" such as purified water,
alcohol,
lactose, sucrose or glycerol. A ready-to-use homeopathic product
contains only minute amounts of the raw materials.
Examples
Homeopathic dilution
D1
contains one part stock and nine parts
vehicle
(1:10). D2 contains one
part D1 dilution and nine
parts vehicle (1:100). D4
contains one part stock
in 10,000 parts finished products (1:10,000). C1
contains one part dilution C1 and 99 parts vehicle (1:100).
C2 contains one part dilution C1
and 99 parts vehicle
(1:10,000).
Preparation of Homeopathic Potentisation
Take one drop of crude drugs and add 99 parts of distilled water or
alcohol, mix and shake ( succuss) 100 time. Its become 1C potency. Take
1 drop from 1C potency and add 99 drops of water or alcohol, mix and
shake for 100 time to become 2C potency. The same procedure follow to
prepare 3C, 12C, 30C, 200C, 1000C, 10,000C, etc. The LM-Potency or
"Q-potency" (from Latin "Quinquagintamillesima" = 50,000). The LM is
produced by diluting a 3c potency at a ratio of 1:50,000. Potencies are
increased in the usual way with the same ratio.
The
Degrees of "Potency" - In Homeopathy, different
levels of "dynamization" can be distinguished. They are classified as
follows:
| Low
Potency | D1
to D6 ( 1x to 6x ) | C1
to C6 ( 1C to 6C
)
| Q1
(LM1) and Q2 (LM2) | | Mid
Potency | D12
to D 23 ( 6x to 23x ) | C6
to C12 ( 6C to
12C ) | Q3
(LM3), Q4 (LM4), Q5 (LM5) | | High
Potency | D24
or more (24x and higher) | C13
or more (
13C
and higher) | |
The dilution process
Homeopathy defines the potency of its remedies according to how diluted
they are; the more diluted, the stronger it considers them. The process
of dilution is called "Potentisation". The potency is defined in terms
of a number, where the higher the number, the higher the dilution. 30X,
for example, is 1020 times more diluted (and thus, according to
homeopathy, more potent) than 10X. This is in contrast to conventional
medicine and biochemistry which hold that the more of an active
ingredient is present in a drug, the more effect (whether positive or
negative) it will have.
Scientific notation (standard
index notation)...
is a concise way of recording numbers by integer powers of ten, that is
used to record numbers which are notably large or small. Such notation
is used to record physical quantities without including trailing, or
leading, zeros.
